Dish Network, in launching its HDTV, first used an 18-inch satellite dish dubbed the Dish 300 to enable its subscribers access a specific signal from a single satellite location. A 20-inch satellite dishes referred to as Dish 500 is what Dish is using at present. This enables subscribers to access satellite locations at the same time. There is also in existence the Dish 1000 and Super Dish. This allows receptions of satellite signals from three satellite locations. The Dish 1000 gets signals from satellites at 1100W, 1190W and 1290W, while the two Super Dish’s get signal from 1190W, 1100W, and 1050W and 1190W, 1100W and 1210W.
Dish 1000 and Super Dish are getting increasingly important as the number of programs available in HD is constantly been increased by the company. Dish is optimistic that its offerings for national and local US television network stations and international programming can be improved. The Dish Network has been putting the DVB-S broadcasting standard for their channels into use for several years. However, with the introduction of the HDTV, changes in the MPEG – 4 systems has become a must. This HDTV is said to eat up a huge amount of bandwidth. To cope with the situation, Dish announced that all of its new HDTV channels will only be available in MPEG-4 beginning 1st February 2006. Dish will still stick to its line up of shows under MPEG-2. With the new Digital Video Recording, subscribers of Dish can receive the new shows. However, the DVR will be made available with an upgrade fee.
Dish plans to convert its entire programming to MPEG-4, which includes standard – definition channels and high – definition. This is in order to further expand its channel lineup. Dish is using Dish 1000 system that pulls from 129 and 110/119 orbital slots for its new MPEG-4 system. The MPEG-4 HDTV is being served by the 129 orbital slots. This setup also makes it possible for Dish to provide HD local – into locals.
